Recommendations for Hair Types

Oily/Fine Hair and Scalp:

The Peppermint and Tea Tree and Acai Berry and Lime shampoos work best for oil hair and scalp. Use either of these in conjunction with any of our conditioners to restore a proper pH balance (mildly acidic) to your scalp and hair. The apple cider vinegar base in our conditioners works perfectly for managing excess oil production, leaving your hair softer and less prone to tangles.

Dry Hair and Scalp:

If you regularly dry or color-treat your hair, then the Mango Honey and Pomegranate shampoos will have the most desirable effect, as they contain more oil for better moisturization. Use our Honey and Lime Conditioner with either shampoo.

For dry/damaged ends, follow up with the Shine Serum for Hair. Apply a few drops to the palms, then scrunch throughout dampened, towel-dried hair. Concentrate the bulk of the formula on the last 1-2 inches of length.

Itchy Scalp/ Dandruff/ Scalp Psoriasis:

The Peppermint and Tea Tree Shampoo works best for most cases of itchiness caused by various forms of scalp dermatitis. If dry skin/scalp causes the irritation, then select either the Lush Lavender or Citrus Squeeze for best results.

The apple cider vinegar base in our conditioners provides an excellent pairing for irritated, flaky, or itchy scalp. Apple cider vinegar has a well-recognized ability to both soothe and balance various scalp conditions.

Color-Treated Hair:

Our shampoos contain no sulfates in their formulas. Sulfates in commercial brands generally cause color to fade out quickly. While our shampoos and conditioners naturally contain no sulfates, its effect depends in large on the type of dye used (semi-permanent or permanent, salon-applied, home kit, etc.) and the color itself. We currently have many clients using our shampoos that have specifically stated they color-treat their hair. We have had only one report in 2011 regarding an adverse color issue. The client only told us she used a red color, but neglected to report any further information regarding the color system she used, or how much time passed since she last colored her before shampooing.

So, we know that most types of color systems react well to our shampoos. But it will really depend on your selected color and how well your hair tolerates it. We advise you to separate a section of hair from the underside, and shampoo and rinse it separately. Use a white or lightly colored towel to dry the area, and check for any rubbed-off stains. This helps you determine the compatibility of your color and our shampoo.

Directions for Best Results:

How Do I Use a Face Naturals Shampoo?

You will need to use an ample amount of shampoo for the length and thickness of your hair. We recommend a quarter-sized amount for every 4-6 inches of length. You may use more shampoo initially until your hair adjusts to not being stripped with each wash. You may also feel the need to wash more frequently during the detox period until your hair sheds the oil buildup.

How Do I Use a Face Naturals Conditioner?

After thoroughly rinsing the baking soda and shampoo, follow up with one of our conditioners. Unlike a store-bought conditioner, you do not need to use a large amount of the conditioner. Simply work a light coat through the hair and scalp, and rinse. Concentrate the bulk of the conditioner on the ‘free’ length of your hair, finger-combing the remaining amount through the scalp to keep your hair from feeling heavy.

If you are not using enough of the conditioner, then the soap may actually stick to your hair. The vinegar in the conditioner helps re-acidify the scalp environment. Your hair and  scalp normally prefer a slightly acidic pH, and natural soap-based shampoos like ours have an alkalinity that remove excess oils and debris.

The conditioner will leave a pleasantly light scent, and improve the experience of our natural shampoos. After working the formula throughout your hair, you should only need to rinse it out lightly. Heavy rinsing at this step can result in removing the acid balance the conditioner is designed to provide.

What is a Castile Soap Shampoo? And Why Do You Need Vinegar?

Our shampoos are a true soap with no detergent-based formula, unlike most conventional shampoos (and even many ‘natural’ brands). The effects resemble using a shampoo bar.

Detergents used in most shampoos prevent oils and dissolved minerals in your water supply from literally sticking to your hair. They strip these substances off of each strand. A true soap does not have that type of strong, stripping ability. For some situations, it causes the extra oils and minerals deposits to stick, making the hair feel heavy, or even oily. It can also cause difficulty in combing or brushing.

Apple cider vinegar provides the final rinse that softens the hair, allows it to shine, and makes it easier to comb through. Our conditioner performs similarly. Plain vinegar rinses can cause hair to feel dry, so we formulated our conditions with natural moisturizers like aloe, camellia seed oil, and even organic guar gum to provide emollient properties and thicken the formula.

New To Organic Hair Products?

You are new to natural hair care…

If you are new to using natural soap-based shampoos, your hair will shed residue from your old hair products for several days – especially if you used silicone-based products. Silicone and waxes coat your hair strands with each use. Products promising to ‘add shine’ or ‘repair split ends’ are the worst offenders. The percentage of petroleum-based silicones and waxes in such products runs quite high.

Are you still using any styling aids (gel, mousse, hair spray, etc.)? If so, you may need to check the labels for any kind of -cone ingredient. You may be applying petroleum-based silicones and waxes back into your hair each time you use them.

Remember that your scalp produces oil to protect the skin. Clients frequently have chronically oily skin as a result of over-cleansing, thus causing the skin to produce more oil for compensation. As your scalp gets used to our products that do not strip it, your hair may feel oilier than you are used to.

Eventually, your hair will detox itself of the chemical cuticle coating each strand’s surface, and the scalp will start to balance out oil production. Give the process some time and patience, as the detox process can last up to about four weeks, depending on the person. Some people immediately get preferred results, with no detox period at all. Eventually, you will attain the softer, bouncier, more manageable hair you desire.

 If your hair feels oily/sticky/heavy…

When using a natural, non-detergent shampoo like ours, many factors come into play, such as water hardness at your residence, whether or not you chemically treat your hair, whether or not you use commercial styling aids (mousse, gel, pomade, etc.), and the last time you used a detergent-based shampoo.

When you start using a soap-based regimen like ours, you may experience a short adjustment period. Your hair may feel heavy or oily, as the layers of chemicals coating each strand peel away. Silicone-based conditioners and petrochemicals in most shampoos actually build up on your hair. If you experience, we recommend speeding the process along by mixing a spoonful of baking soda into the squeezed-out shampoo, as you hold it in your hand. Use enough of each so that the concoction feels like a paste in your hands. Use this like a hair scrub, by scrubbing the roots and working down to the ends of your hair. Rinse well, and your hair should feel ‘squeaky,’ not slippery. Repeat if you do not get this effect.
